Zola vs The Knot vs Joy: Which Works for an Indian Wedding?

8 October 2026 · Niraj

If you are weighing Zola vs The Knot vs Joy for an Indian wedding, here is the short answer. All three, and Appy Couple, build a good wedding website, and most of them let you invite guests to some events and not others. None of them, as far as we could find, plans the functions themselves: the haldi menu, the sangeet running order, the budget split between two families. Pick one of them for your website and RSVPs, and use a planning tool behind it.

We make DoDeewane, a planning tool for multi-day Indian weddings. We compared the four in October 2026, and we say where each one is strongest.

What an Indian wedding needs from a planning tool

Most wedding software was built for one ceremony and one guest list. An Indian wedding runs 5 to 9 functions over three or four days, with 200 to 300 guests invited to different subsets, and two families planning and paying. We judged each tool on eight things that follow from that:

  • Invitations per function. Your college friends come to the sangeet. Your grandmother's neighbours come to the wedding and nothing else.
  • Guests by household. Indian families are invited as families, and RSVPs come back that way.
  • A headcount for each function. The caterer for the mehndi needs a different number from the caterer for the reception.
  • A plan for each function. Every function has its own decor, menu, outfits, seating and vendors.
  • Your ceremonies. Punjabi, Gujarati, Marwadi or a mix, in the right order.
  • A budget split between families. Often in two currencies, with deposits and installments to more than 20 vendors.
  • Access for parents and siblings. They plan too, and each needs to see some things and not others.
  • Rooms for guests flying in. Hotel blocks, who stays where, and who pays for which nights.

Zola

Zola is a free wedding website with a registry, a guest list, a budget tool and a vendor marketplace attached.

What works for an Indian wedding

  • You add each function as an event and tick which guests are invited to it. Guests can only RSVP to the events they are invited to.
  • Online RSVPs are switched on event by event, so a private function can still take RSVPs from the guests you chose.
  • The guest list tracks meal choices and plus-ones, and the seating chart has separate tables for each event.

What we could not find

  • Grouping guests by household. The help pages describe guests one at a time.
  • A plan for each function beyond seating: decor, menu, outfits.
  • Indian ceremonies, a budget split between families or currencies, or access for parents.

Cost: the website is free.

The Knot

The Knot is a US wedding vendor marketplace with a free app that holds a checklist, a budget, a guest list, a website and a registry.

What works for an Indian wedding

  • The vendor marketplace is the strongest reason to use it: browse vendors, filter by price and category, and read reviews.
  • The guest list keeps details for every event, from the shower to the reception, and the RSVP page can list your events and ask meal questions.
  • Everything is free apart from printed invitations.

What we could not find

  • RSVPs tracked separately for each function, or guests grouped by household.
  • A plan for each function, or Indian ceremonies.
  • Access for parents and siblings. Couples share one login.
  • A budget split between families or currencies. The Budget Advisor's estimates come from the reported spend of US couples.

Cost: free.

Joy

Joy (withjoy.com) is a free wedding website and app with RSVPs, a guest list, a registry and hotel room blocks.

What works for an Indian wedding

  • One schedule for the whole weekend, personalised for each guest. Each guest sees only the functions they are invited to.
  • RSVP questions can differ by function, and answers come only from the guests invited to it.
  • Guest tags such as "family" or "reception only" decide who sees which function, and you can override them for one guest.
  • Discounted group hotel rates for guests, without putting the room block on your card.

What we could not find

  • A headcount or plan for each function beyond the RSVPs.
  • Indian ceremonies, a budget, or access for parents and siblings.

Cost: the website, app, RSVPs and guest list are free.

Appy Couple

Appy Couple is a paid wedding website and native app with digital invitations and more than 500 designs.

What works for an Indian wedding

  • Several events, each with its own RSVP and its own invitee list.
  • Families grouped together on the guest list, with plus-ones.
  • RSVP questions such as meal choice, childcare and song requests, with reminders before the deadline.
  • A native app for guests, with privacy settings and hidden itinerary items.

What we could not find

  • A headcount or plan for each function beyond the RSVPs.
  • Indian ceremonies, a budget, or access for parents and siblings.

Cost: $99 a year or $12 a month for the website, app and digital invitations. A custom domain costs extra.

Zola vs The Knot vs Joy vs Appy Couple, side by side

The four are strongest on the guest-facing side: the website, invitations and RSVPs. The planning behind it is where they stop.

Where DoDeewane fits

DoDeewane is not a wedding website or a registry. Keep Zola, The Knot, Joy or Appy Couple for those. DoDeewane is the plan behind them: one place for every function, guest, outfit and payment, shared with both families and your planner.

  • Your ceremonies, in order. Pick Punjabi, Gujarati or Marwadi traditions, or two of them, and the functions appear in one running order, ready to change.
  • A plan for each function. Each function has its own guests, decor, menu, attire, seating, vendors, schedule and budget.
  • Guests by household, counted per function. Paste in your guest list and RSVPs from a spreadsheet. Change a headcount and the catering line follows.
  • Contracts read for you. Upload a vendor contract, or a photo of one. The true total, the payment schedule and the coverage hours go into the budget.
  • Problems caught early. A photographer contracted for eight hours against a ten-hour day shows up weeks before the wedding, not at the reception.
  • One budget for two families. Every payment rolled up by who is paying, in USD, INR, GBP, EUR or AED.
  • Parents and siblings in the right seat. Each gets the access you set, and anything you choose stays hidden from them.
  • Outfits and the India shopping trip. What each person wears to each function, their sizes, and the list for the trip.

We are admitting ten founding couples with weddings after April 2027.

Which should you use?

An Indian wedding usually needs two kinds of tool: one for guests, one for the plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is Zola or The Knot better for an Indian wedding?

For guests, Zola. It lets you invite each guest to specific functions and turn on RSVPs function by function. The Knot is stronger for finding vendors. Neither plans the functions themselves.

Is Joy better than Zola?

For a multi-day wedding, Joy's personalised schedule is the simplest for guests: each sees only the functions they are invited to. Zola adds a registry, a budget tool and seating charts for each event. Both are free.

Which wedding website handles multiple events?

Zola, Joy and Appy Couple all let you invite guests to some events and not others, and collect RSVPs for each. The Knot's RSVP page can list your events.

What is the best wedding website for an Indian wedding?

One that shows each guest only the functions they are invited to and groups guests by family. Joy and Appy Couple come closest.

Do I need a planning tool as well as a wedding website?

For a wedding with several functions, two families paying and guests flying in, yes. A wedding website handles what guests see. A planning tool holds the budget, the vendors, the outfits and the plan for each function.
